What is Equine Shiatsu? The word Shiatsu literally means 'finger pressure' and is a holistic non-invasive healing method that balances the energy in the horse's body. It incorporates a series of gentle stretches and joint rotations, along with working with the energy channels, or meridians as they are more commonly known. Shiatsu can help with all sorts of conditions in the horse. It can assist with improving or even eliminating physical, emotional and behavioural issues. Equine Shiatsu uses Five Element Theory and TCM – Traditional Chinese Medicine to aid diagnosis and to help the practitioner decide what type of treatment the horse should receive. A full explanation of this is covered during the initial consultation with the owner. The Treatment The first treatment lasts about 45 minutes to 1 hour and will include a consultation with the owner. I also like to see the horse walk before I begin the treatment. I work with the horse in the stable and will begin with an all over body-wipe to introduce myself and my touch to the horse. This prepares the horse for the rest of the treatment which will include meridian work, joint rotations and gentle muscle stretches. It is advisable to rest the horse for the rest of the day. Veterinary permission is required for this treatment and owners are required to sign a consent form. Qualifications I have studied for two years with the School of Equine Shiatsu in West Sussex. I am a Practitioner member of tESA, the Equine Shiatsu Association and I am fully insured to work with horses using this therapy. Cost The cost for this treatment is £35.00 per horse. I do make a charge for mileage if travelling over 10 miles at 40p per mile. There is a reduction of 10% if I work on more than one horse at the same yard. |
